About 'Bama Speaks' The process: it was very important to all of the collaborating adults that the kids make their own piece. We started the process during our school's "Dance and Theater Week" with Cucalorus resident artist Jen Ray, from Vancouver, Canada. She joyfully worked on the topic of barriers and created a pathway for the children to follow, but encouraged them to be creative within those bounds. Amanda & Rachael continued the process, generating comfortability of making a performance piece through exercises such as physical character work, and learning how to be an attentive audience member. Building blocks began to form as the children performed and watched each other. Next we began to work with the recording the children speak about the artwork they painted with the topic of borders & territory and what those words meant to them. |
